Snoring vs. Sleep Apnea

Snoring vs. Sleep Apnea

Distinguishing between a person who simply snores and one who also suffers from severe Obsructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is important. While both scenarios have consequences for your health, different problems can compel different treatments. Simpler, less invasive treatments exist for those who simply snore and/or suffer from mild to moderate OSA.

In layman’s terms, snoring is a sound that is caused by a vibration of tissues. These vibrations come from tissues that may include the soft palate and the throat. Nasal obstruction and a large base of the tongue may also contribute to the vibration of these tissues.

While simple snoring is a partial obstruction of the airway, OSA is a far more serious condition in which there is total obstruction of the airway. Occurring in 4-9% of the U.S. adult population, OSA blocks oxygen from reaching your lungs during sleep. At Sereno, our approach is always collaborative and consultative. Before undergoing treatment, our highly specialized medical practitioners work with you to explain the causes of your snoring and provide the best treatment to stop it.
